Quick Tips on Managing Your Child's Behaviors

  • Tell your child what TO DO instead of what NOT to do.
  • Be consistent - always follow through.
  • Offer choices (Do not use threats)
  • Get down on their level
  • Make sure basic needs are met – are they hungry, tired, need to use the bathroom, etc.
  • Label the emotion (“You look like you’re feeling angry/sad/frustrated…”)
  • Empathize with them (“You’re angry because ______, that would make me feel angry too.”)
  • Validate their emotions (“It’s okay to feel angry, but it’s not okay to hit/kick etc.”)
  • Avoid shame-oriented redirection (“What’s wrong with you?”)
  • Model the use of coping skills – deep breathing, stretching, etc.
